We've heard it all before, that "it's not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game." In Hollywood, winning is the only game in town. It's a business that can't afford to play by the simple life lessons of youth. Entertainment is a ruthless business that lives by its own set of rules. To take a cynical look at it, it's a lot like politics: it will often do anything to get your vote (i.e., your money at the box office). Ask it what it believes in and the answer is money, the lifeblood of the industry. To sell the most tickets, it frequently has to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Without money, it can't afford to make family films like "Kicking and Screaming," a Universal Pictures release about the effect that little league sports can have on suburban families.

"David LeVan, president of Chance Enterprises Inc., the midstate partnership planning to build the Gettysburg Gaming Resort & Spa, called the Friends' decision 'disappointing.'

House vows bingo machines won't morph into slots

Electronic bingo terminals will not morph into slot machines if House members get their way.

Earlier this week, the Senate passed legislation allowing existing bingo parlors to use electronic terminals for their games. Gambling opponents and some lawmakers worried that the machines were a backdoor effort to expand legalized gambling in Texas.

But anti-gambling fervor ruled Thursday night during the House debate over legislation to allow the Texas Lottery Commission to continue operating. Without any debate, the House adopted amendments to ensure that the bingo machines cannot be used to legalize gambling that is currently illegal.

Betting markets have defeated experts, polls and the media in predicting the outcome of current events such as presidential elections.

During the past four U.S. presidential campaigns, economists at the University of Iowa have operated an Internet-based futures market system, where anybody could bet on one of the two major-party candidates.

In the 2004 election, for example, every source in the U.S. considered the race too closes to call before the election night. But the University of Iowa market gave George W. Bush a clear edge since the end of the Republican convention in September, two months ahead.
