Atlantic City Looks Beyond Gambling

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer: " A replica of 1950s pre-communist Havana opened in this capitalist gambling haven yesterday.

"The $285 million retail, dining and entertainment complex called the Quarter at Tropicana Casino & Resort - this city's largest nongaming expansion project to date - was specifically designed to capture Old Havana in its pre-Fidel Castro heyday.

"…The Old Havana concept for the Quarter is borrowed directly from the Forum Shops in Las Vegas, where nongambling revenue accounted for 57 percent of last year's $10.4 billion in total revenue for the Strip's 40 casinos. It represents Atlantic City's attempt to boost nongambling revenue, as slot-machine competition intensifies from neighboring states, including Pennsylvania.

$77 Million Jackpot

Mega Millions players are feeling the excitement as the jackpot continues to grow. When Tuesday's winning numbers were drawn, they turned 426,995 tickets into Mega Millions winners. Each of those tickets matched one of Mega Millions' nine prize levels. Since no ticket matched all six numbers, the jackpot grows to an estimated $77 million for the Friday, November 5, 2004 drawing.

Three Mega Millions tickets won $175,000 for matching the first five numbers and only missing the Mega Ball number. Those tickets were sold in Illinois, New Jersey and New York. In addition, 23 tickets won $5,000 each for matching four numbers plus the Mega Ball.
